چکیده

[1] Serpentine, recently discovered on Mars using Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter data, is uncommon but found in three geologic settings: (1) in mélange terrains at the Claritas Rise and the Nili Fossae, (2) associated with a few southern highlands impact craters, and (3) associated with a regional olivine‐rich stratigraphic unit near the Isidis basin. Any presently active serpentinization processes would be occurring beneath the surface and mineral products would not be apparent with surface and orbital data; however, finding serpentine in several Noachian terrains indicates active serpentinization processes in Mars’ past. Important implications are the past production of magnetite, which may contribute to chemical remnant magnetization of Mars’ crust, and production of H2, which is a suitable energy source for chemosynthetic microbial life. Ancient hydrothermal seafloor deposits in Eridania basin on Mars

The Eridania region in the southern highlands of Mars once contained a vast inland sea with a volume of water greater than that of all other Martian lakes combined. Here we show that the most ancient materials within Eridania are thick (>400 m), massive (not bedded), mottled deposits containing saponite, talc-saponite, Fe-rich mica (for example, glauconite-nontronite), Fe- and Mg-serpentine, Mg...

Spring Deposits on Mars: Physical Processes from Terrestrial Analogs

Introduction. An important first step in the current Mars exploration strategy [10] is the detection of sites where there is evidence for past or present near-surface water on Mars. This study evaluates the large-scale morphology of spring deposits and the physical processes of their formation, growth, and evolution in terms that relate to (1) their identification in image data, (2) their forma...

Hydrous Environments on Mars from Visible-Infrared Orbital Data

Introduction: Data acquired over the past 5 years from the Mars Express OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, L'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activitié) [1] and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter CRISM (Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars) [2] show a wide diversity hydrated mineral phases distributed across Mars [1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. The increased spatial resolution of CRISM (18 m/p) has lead...

Fracture-controlled paleo-fluid flow in Candor Chasma, Mars.

Color observations from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal zones of localized fluid alteration (cementation and bleaching) along joints within layered deposits in western Candor Chasma, Mars. This fluid alteration occurred within the subsurface in the geologic past and has been exposed at the surface through subsequent erosion. These f...

Identification of chlorite and serpentine in cosmetic or pharmaceutical talc.

Chlorite is the most common accessory mineral group found in high purity talc ore used in cosmetic or pharmaceutical consumer talcum products. X-ray diffraction and wet chemical analytical data obtained on geologic samples representing commercial talc ore deposits of high purity and on processed samples representing talc found in consumer talcum products indicate that clinochlore and penninite ...
